  • Babysitting 101

    Emergency Outfitters This course is best suited for 10-13 year olds interested in learning the current practices of caring for young children and how to manage their babysitting business. Students will learn safety and injury prevention, first aid basics, feeding and caring for infants and how to handle behavior problems. Students will receive a reference book, handouts, babysitting bag and first aid kit. Please bring a writing utensil, snacks, beverage(s), and lunch. Food will not be provided. Parents - please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the end of class to pick up your child.

    CSB/SJU Computer Science Club & Patty Peschel, Albany Area Schools Teacher Do you enjoy a good puzzle? Are you creative, and love to tackle problems in many different ways? Do you want to learn what Computer Science is all about and become a better problem solver along the way? CS Club is open to all students in grades 6-8. In CS Club, you will learn about coding and so much more. You will get to solve puzzles, learn how computers store information and communicate and practice working in a team. You will even get to program a real robot using Scratch! To start, we will come up with creative solutions for puzzles and challenges, and by the end of the 6-week program, we will be using our coding skills to help robots solve problems in the real world. Creativity is key, and no two solutions are ever quite the same!

    Tech Academy ntro to 3D Printing ►Grades 3-6 This 3D printing camp takes students through the 3D printing process from start to finish. Students will design their own keychains! No 3D printing experience is necessary, but familiarity with common tasks like using a computer and keyboarding is required. One design will be printed offline and mailed home.     Nikki Myogeto, Albany Area Schools Teacher Come join the fun and learn the strategic game of cribbage! Students will practice their mental math, observe and continue patterns, solve basic functions, witness probability concepts, and relate sets and combinations. The final class will be a tournament to see who has the most skill and luck. Note: For those who already know how to play cribbage, look for Cribbage Club this winter.     Tech Academy: Don’t just play games, create them! Learn to modify and build our arcade-style games using Scratch. Scratch is a programming language developed by MIT.   • Middle School Knowledge Bowl

    Patty Peschel, Albany Area Schools Teacher Knowledge Bowl is a series of interdisciplinary academic competitions. During the competition, teams of students compete in written and oral rounds by answering questions related to all areas of learning typical of elementary or secondary educational programs. Questions test students' recall, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Practice will be held twice a week on M/T from 3:15-4:15 pm, beginning October 14. Each team will have the opportunity to compete in meets this fall. Teams will leave for meets around 3:00 pm and will return around 8:00 pm. More information on meets will come once it's available. Transportation is included in the price of this class. We will hope to register/attend the Eden Valley Watkins Meet on Tuesday, Oct 28 and the St. Katherine Drexel Meet on Thursday, Nov 13.

    Middle School Play

    Paula van der Hagen, Albany Area Schools Teacher This middle school production will give students the opportunity to explore all aspects of theatre while getting time on stage in a fun, supportive, and creative environment. Each student will have a part in the play and will work on technical elements to bring the performance to life for an audience. Practices are Mondays-Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 pm and students will perform the afternoon of February 7. Play: The Day The Internet Died On a sunny day in the town of Bloomington, a devastating occurrence happens. No, it’s not famine, or floods, or loss of your basic rights. The internet has gone down! And it will continue to be down! For a week! A whole week! Pandemonium! In a world that is so dependent on the internet for shopping, mailing, and posting pictures of cute babies, how will society function? Not well as it turns out. The Day the Internet Died hilariously explores how inept we are at dating, research, and basic human interactions when we don’t have a screen to look at.
  • Middle School VEX Robotics Team

    Design, Engineering, Building, Coding, Programming, Teamwork, Challenge, Competition... Robots are COMING! Join the team and be part of reviving the Albany Middle School Huskie Robotics Team! Practices will be on Mondays and Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 pm starting Monday, Oct 20 through the last tournament or state if we qualify. If the team qualifies for the state tournament, then we will continue practices after the last tentative tournament on Feb 7 through when the state tournament meets on March 5- additional fees may be incurred. We’ll teach you how to combine just the right amount of cake crumbs and buttercream icing to create tasty cake pops in fun Thanksgiving designs! You will learn to read a recipe & follow directions, how to melt candy melts and all about kitchen safety. At the end of this class you bring home some creative cake pops for your family!!
  • PotSpot Painting Fun

    PotSpot Instructors Join PotSpot to paint a fun decoration of your choice. We will provide an assortment of pieces, some with a fall theme. We bring the supplies, you bring the creativity! The PotSpot will fire your piece in their kiln and return it to school in about two weeks. Parents please pick up your child from the art classroom, enter through Kids Co doors (#4 at AVE and #5 at ALE).
  • Snowmobile Safety

    Steve Weber, MN DNR Instructor In this class, students will learn all the rules and regulations of snowmobiling, general operation of a snowmobile, how to read and understand trail signs, proper hand signals and general safety concerns. Students will need to come with a completed online course certification. The online course is $29.95 payable to the MN DNR. The link is www.snowmobilecourse.com/usa/minnesota. Students need to complete the Youth Course Ages 11-15. Students will need to pass a driving test at the end of the course. Snowmobiles are provided for the test; however, students are required to bring their own snowmobile helmet (not allowed to share) and must come dressed for snowmobile riding (jackets, snow pants, boots, balaclava, gloves). Class will meet at the Albany Bowling Center/G'Suffa Haus Banquet Room. Students receive a temporary permit upon passing the course and a permanent permit from the state of MN by mail. This class is for 12-15 year old students. If a student turns 12 during this snowmobile season, they can take the class; however, certification is not valid until they turn 12 years old.
